Nothing about the process can be rushed without showing in the finished piece, which is why authentic hand knotting commands a premium and why a genuine article appreciates rather than depreciates.

Knot density (KPSI — knots per square inch) is the headline specification, but it must be read alongside material and design. A coarse 40–80 KPSI wool rug is robust, forgiving and well suited to family rooms; 100–150 KPSI in wool or wool-silk allows refined detail for formal interiors; 200–300+ KPSI is the realm of fine silk masterpieces where the design approaches the resolution of a painting. Higher density is not universally "better" — it is a trade-off between detail, durability, hand-feel and budget that we help each client balance.

The foundation and finishing are what separate a rug that lies flat for generations from one that curls and wears unevenly. We hand-string cotton or silk warps under even tension, beat down each row of knots consistently, and finish with hand-shearing, washing and stretching. Buyers new to hand knotted carpet often anchor entirely on knot density, but the more useful question is fitness for purpose. A 300 KPSI silk rug is breathtaking and best suited to a low-traffic formal room or a wall; a family living room is better served by a robust 80–120 KPSI wool piece that hides everyday wear and cleans easily. Always verify authenticity by examining the reverse — the design should read clearly on the back with the natural slight irregularity of hand work, and there should be no secondary backing. Ask for the material composition in writing, since "silk" can mean pure mulberry silk, art silk (viscose) or a blend, and the difference is significant in both value and care. Finally, treat a fine knotted rug as an investment: keep documentation of its construction and origin, which supports both insurance and future resale value.
